Moving to a new house can be both an exciting time and overwhelming.
To help make the process smoother, we have are some moving house tips for you to consider in order to make the process easier.
- Hire professional movers or get help
Decide whether you want to hire professional movers or ask friends and family for assistance. If you opt for professional movers, do your research and book them well in advance. If you choose to do it yourself, make sure to ask for help early and plan accordingly.
- Plan and organize
Create a moving checklist to keep track of tasks such as notifying utility companies, changing your address, hiring movers, packing, and unpacking. Having a clear plan will help you stay organized throughout the process.
- Only pack what you need
Take this opportunity to go through your belongings and get rid of items you no longer use. Consider donating, selling, or disposing of them. Minimizing your possessions will make packing and unpacking easier and can save you money on moving expenses.
- Box your items strategically
Start packing well in advance, focusing on one room at a time. Use sturdy boxes, label them clearly, and pack similar items together. Fragile items should be wrapped in bubble wrap or packing paper and marked as fragile. Keep essential items like toiletries, a change of clothes, and important documents separate for easy access. It will then also be easy to unpack for your new home.
- Do not leave valuables unattended while moving
Its often too easy to just leave the house door open while moving boxes to the car but resist that urge in case burglars are watching. Likewise do not leave the car or van door unlocked while it is unattended especially if you live in a built up area where many people may be passing. - Update your address
Change your address with the post office, as well as with important institutions like banks, credit unions, employers, credit card companies, utility companies, and subscription services. Update your address on your identification documents as well, such as your driver's license and vehicle registration.
- Take care of utilities at the new place
Prioritize setting up utilities at your new home. Ensure that electricity, water, gas, internet, and other essential services are ready before you move in. This will prevent any inconveniences once you arrive.
- Pack an essentials box
Prepare a box with essential items you'll need immediately upon arriving at your new home. This box can include toiletries, a set of clothes, basic kitchen supplies, important documents, and any other items you might need within the first few days.
- Take pictures before packing electronics
If you have complex electronic setups or furniture with many wires, consider taking pictures before disconnecting them. This will help you remember how to set them up in your new home.
- Clean before unpacking
If possible, clean the new house before unpacking your belongings. It's much easier to clean an empty space, and it will make the unpacking process more pleasant.
