Top Tips to Keep Your Home Safe While You Are Gardening

Published: May 24, 2023 by Marguerite Cotter

‘71% of Irish homeowners are concerned about a burglary in their home’

With good weather finally making an appearance, and Bord Bia Bloom taking place next week, it’s officially garden time. Whether it's BBQ’s, paddling pools, trampolines or a nice bit of gardening, people are now starting to spend more and more time in their gardens.

With that in mind, PhoneWatch, Ireland’s leading provider of monitored home alarm systems, is reminding people how important it is to keep your home secure when you’re out in the garden this summer. Adding features like alarms, lighting, and outdoor security cameras can make a big difference.

Eoin Dunne, Managing Director of PhoneWatch, said, “as people in Ireland start to take to their gardens to enjoy the good weather, we want to remind them that a number of burglaries take place  when the homeowner is in the home. By following our expert tips, homeowners can spend the time in their gardens relaxing, safe in the knowledge that their home and belongings are protected.  We know that 714% of Irish homeowners are concerned about a burglary in their home* so we want to share tips to help people enjoy their summer with a sense of ease”

PhoneWatch tips to keep your home safe and secure when gardening:

    1. Lock all doors and windows: Before heading out to the garden, make sure all the doors and windows in your home are securely locked. This simple step is often overlooked but can be an effective deterrent against potential intruders.
    2. Secure garden gates and fences: Ensure that your garden gates and fences are sturdy and in good condition. Check for any weak spots or damage that could be exploited. Consider installing a lock on your gate to prevent unauthorised access. If you're gardening on a larger property, such as a farm, you may face additional risks. For more comprehensive farm security tips, check out our article on keeping your farm safe and secure from theft and burglary.
    3. Trim vegetation near windows and entrances: Overgrown shrubs and trees near windows and entrances can provide cover for intruders. Regularly trim them back to eliminate hiding spots and increase visibility.
    4. Install outdoor lighting: Adequate outdoor lighting is crucial for home security. Install motion-sensor lights around the perimeter of your home and near entry points. These lights will automatically turn on when motion is detected, discouraging anyone from approaching your property unnoticed.

    5. Use curtains or blinds: When you're in the garden, close your curtains or blinds to prevent prying eyes from seeing inside your home. This reduces the temptation for potential burglars by limiting their knowledge of your possessions and activities.
    6. Have a neighbour keep an eye out:  At Phonewatch we really believe in the power of the community and the importance of building up a relationship with your neighbours.  Once they’re aware of your comings and goings they always keep an eye on your house!.
    7. Install a monitored home security system: Consider installing a security system that includes alarms, surveillance cameras, and even smart home integration. These systems can deter potential intruders and provide you with peace of mind.   Make sure to display signs or stickers indicating that your home is protected by a security system.  Research shows that homes protected by a monitored home alarm from Phonewatch are 4 times less likely to be burgled.
    8. Secure valuable items: If you have expensive outdoor equipment or furniture, consider securing them with locks or chains. This makes it more difficult for thieves to quickly snatch and steal your belongings.
    9. Lock up garden sheds and garages: Ensure that garden sheds and garages are properly locked when you're not using them. These areas often store tools and equipment that can be tempting for thieves.

Eoin Dunne, Managing Director of PhoneWatch, continued, “By following these tips, you can help keep your home safe while you enjoy your time outside in the garden. Remember, maintaining a vigilant and proactive approach to security is key to deterring potential intruders.”

Enjoy your garden this summer. For all things gardening don’t miss the Bord Bia Bloom Festival; Bord Bia Bloom - Ireland's Largest Gardening Festival. PhoneWatch will be there at stand OR20 and G41, for all things home security!
